This is a MK262 Mod 1 cartridge, which Black Hills Ammunition originally developed in conjunction with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. The specialized 5.56x45 cartridge was meant to provide absolutely unparalleled accuracy, and many would agree that it succeeded in that mission in full. Black Hills chose Sierra’s 77 grain open tip match (OTM) projectile for the round owing to its slightly greater accuracy than other comparable bullets during testing. The bullet’s hollow point does not bring about expansion during penetration, but rather increases the bullet’s stability by putting a greater part of its weight toward its rear. For this reason this round doesn’t satisfy the hollow point criterion that would have banned it for use during warfare.
